The best country wedding you’ll attend this decade probably won’t be the biggest one. Country Weddings — the kind where every guest matters, every detail is considered, and the whole day actually feels like yours — have a specific quality that large productions struggle to match. Finding the right venue makes all the difference.
Imbabali Retreat & Venue in Hekpoort, Magaliesburg is one of the better-kept secrets among country wedding venues in Gauteng. The setting is genuinely stunning: two natural dams, mountain backdrops, established gardens, and a thatched venue that sits naturally in the landscape. It’s the kind of place where the surroundings do a lot of the work.
We can accommodate from 10 to 100 guests sharing on-site, with catering, AV equipment, and event coordination available. One exclusive venue, everything in one place, and a team that’s done this before.

Why Imbabali Works for Country Weddings
There’s a practical case and an aesthetic case. The practical case: when you host a wedding at Imbabali, your guests can stay on the property. No shuttles, no separate hotel bookings, no one getting lost on dark rural roads. Sharing accommodation for up to 30 guests across the Wild Olive Chalet, three self-catering cottages, and the Grapevine House means the whole group is in one place from Friday through Sunday. That changes the energy of the entire weekend.
The aesthetic case is harder to put into words without sounding like a brochure. The Magaliesberg backdrop is real. The dams reflect the mountains in the morning. The gardens are maintained and full. Sunsets behind the mountain range are, on most evenings, genuinely breathtaking. You don’t need to rent décor to make this venue look good — the setting does it naturally.
Our thatched venue handles ceremonies and receptions and can be configured to suit your vision. Catering, AV, and event coordination are all available, meaning you can work with one team rather than managing multiple vendors across a remote location.
Venue & Accommodation Included
The Thatched Venue
A large thatched event space that opens onto the gardens and dam views. Ideal for ceremonies, seated dinners, and receptions. AV equipment available on request. Catering from Imbabali’s kitchen includes spit braai’s, carvery & buffet options, picnic-style spreads, platters, homemade cakes, and a full bar service.
On-Site Accommodation for Your Guests
Three self-catering cottages (sleeps 5 each), Wild Olive Chalet (sleeps 4), and Grapevine House (sleeps 8) give you accommodation for up to 30 guests — all within a short walk of the venue. Having everyone in the same place the night before and after the wedding is one of the biggest advantages of this kind of venue.
Gardens, Dam & Mountain Views
The ceremony backdrop at Imbabali doesn’t need to be hired or constructed. The dam and mountain views are available from multiple points on the property. The maintained garden and private patio areas outside each accommodation unit offer additional outdoor space for pre-ceremony drinks or informal gatherings.
What a Wedding Weekend at Imbabali Looks Like
Most couples who choose Imbabali for a wedding make it a proper weekend event rather than a single-day function. Guests arrive Friday afternoon, settle into their accommodation, and spend the evening relaxing around the property — boma braais, drinks at the bar, a swim.
Saturday is the wedding day: garden or forest ceremony and an outdoor reception under a large awning or in the thatched venue, catering handled on-site, and everyone walking to their rooms at the end of the night. Sunday is recovery — late breakfasts, the dam, some fishing, maybe a spa treatment. Then everyone drives home.
This format works because the venue is genuinely pleasant to spend three days in. It’s not just a function space you’re hiring for six hours. The property holds its own as a destination.

Do you provide catering or do we need our own caterers? Imbabali has an on-site kitchen team that can cater for your wedding, including à la carte dining, platters, bespoke menus, and full bar service. External caterers and self-catered weddings can be discussed — contact us to confirm arrangements.
Can we bring our own décor and flowers? Absolutely. Many couples bring their own florals, lighting, and personal touches. Our team will help coordinate set-up timing and logistics.
Is there accommodation for the couple on the wedding night? Yes — the Wild Olive Chalet is particularly popular for couples on their wedding night. The fireplace, private patio, dam views, and daily servicing make it genuinely special.
What’s the cancellation policy? A non-refundable deposit of 50% of the venue hire is required when making a booking, together with a signed copy of the agreement, to guarantee your booking. The deposit paid guarantees confirmation of the date originally booked. It is not transferable to another date.
