Depends entirely on why you’re going. Work trip, conference, a flight to catch the next morning? Stick to Sandton, Rosebank or anywhere near the airport. Trying to get away from exactly that? Look west, toward the Magaliesberg.
Staying in the City
Sandton and Rosebank carry the highest concentration of hotels in the province, plus the shopping and restaurants to match. Convenient, sure. It’s also where Gauteng feels the most like any other big city, traffic included.
Staying in the West Rand and Magaliesberg
This part of Gauteng catches people off guard if all they know is Johannesburg and Pretoria. Hekpoort, right on the edge of the Cradle of Humankind, sits only 60 to 80 kilometres from both city centres. Drive past Krugersdorp, though, and the whole landscape shifts: dolomite hills, farmland, and accommodation that follows suit, cottages and retreats instead of hotel towers.
We’re in that second group. Imbabali sits on the southern slopes of the Magaliesberg in Hekpoort, about an hour out from either Johannesburg or Pretoria. Far enough that it feels like you’ve actually left, close enough that a weekend covers it.
What Should You Check Before Booking Accommodation in Gauteng?

- Drive time from wherever you’re starting. Google Maps doesn’t know about Joburg or Pretoria traffic at 4pm on a Thursday. Add half an hour if you’re leaving on a weekday.

It’s usually group size that decides which unit makes sense, not budget. Couples and small families lean toward a cottage or the chalet. Bigger groups, extended family, a pile of friends, that’s the Grapevine House or the Bush Camp.

Beyond the water there’s hiking along the Klein Magalies River, a few trail lengths depending on how far you want to go, a golf driving range with a resident pro for lessons, and birdwatching that’s actually pretty good, somewhere around 450 recorded species including the Cape Vulture and the Black Stork. Kids get a jungle gym. Adults get a mobile spa treatment that comes to wherever you’re staying, instead of the usual trek to a spa room.

How Far Is Imbabali From Johannesburg and Pretoria?
About an hour, give or take, depending on traffic and which part of the city you’re leaving from. We sit on Hekpoort Road off the R560, West Rand side of Gauteng, with Krugersdorp and the Cradle of Humankind as your last real landmarks before the turn-off.
Coming from the north of Joburg or from Pretoria, you’ll pass Cradlestone Mall, pick up the R563, then join the R560. The final stretch is a gravel road, fine to drive but easy to miss if nobody’s told you which sign to watch for. So we send proper directions once your booking’s confirmed, not just a pin on a map.
