History Talk
A History Talk with Magaliesburg History Society
presented by Andre Wedepohl at Imbabali Retreat and Venue
In 1836, Captain William Cornwallis Harris an English military engineer, artist, and hunter travelled into the interior of South Africa while on medical leave from the East India Company. His journey through the *Magaliesberg* region is legendary among historians.
Harris was one of the very first Europeans to document the extraordinary wildlife and landscapes of the region in detail. His meticulous journals and beautiful, vivid illustrations became major historical records, capturing an era when the Magaliesberg slopes teemed with wildlife, including massive herds of elephants, rhinos, and the rare sable antelope (which he is credited with scientifically discovering and describing).
